Encumbrances are where a writer has been paid for a photograph or manuscript. If you have been paid, then you may not have the right to reproduce the manuscript in any form without the permission of the copyright holder. Hence, you may not have the right or copyright to have it reproduced here.

What is copyright?

Briefly speaking, copyright on articles, stories and manuscripts can be bought by a company. When you you get paid by a magazine for your article, the magazine is purchasing the right to reproduce that article. They may reprint the article as often as they want for as long as they like. You may not rewrite or reproduce this article and on sell it again. Your photographs may be returned to you but this does not mean that you have had the copyright returned to you.

If you have an article published on this site that you have volunteered for publication, you retain the copyright to the photos and material.
